Green tea (Camellia sinensis) originated in China 4,000 years ago. Today, there are hundreds of different green teas originating from China, as well as Taiwan, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Korea, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Japan.

A Japanese warlord was one of the first to hold a tea party in Japan. He held it in his camp the evening before a large battle in order to calm his warriors and inspire morale.

Green tea contains a group of compounds called polyphenols. Polyphenols have strong antioxidant properties. The six major polyphenols in green tea belong to a group called catechin compounds. The most active of these catechins is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).
